VIEWFINDER: A Memoir of Seeing and Being Seen
If you haven’t already heard of filmmaker Jon M. Chu, you’ve definitely heard of his movies. Films like Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights have made over a billion dollars total at the box office, worldwide. Now, Chu is using his remarkable storytelling talents to tell his own incredible life story, and to share with readers the secrets of his creative success.
Jon is telling his story, but really it’s three stories. The first one is an immigrant story, filled with afternoons at Jon’s parents’ Chinese restaurant, snacking on potstickers and bottomless Coke while doing homework and chatting with customers from all walks of life. Jon’s parents immigrated to California in the 1960’s with nothing, and they and their children had to scrap for every possible opportunity for education, prosperity, and inclusion. Jon takes you into the dining room of the family restaurant, Chef Chu’s, where he held all the important planning meetings for Crazy Rich Asians. The book is an homage to the immigrant story one that simultaneously manages to feel both incredibly unique and entirely universal.
The second story is one of a technological revolution. Jon grew up in Silicon Valley in the 80’s and early 90’s, when what was once a hippie refuge became an incubator for the future. The tech pioneers who set us on our course were regulars at Chef Chu’s including a young Steve Jobs when he was working out of his parents’ garage on the first Apple computer. Jon’s family fed them all, and in turn Jon became a teenager obsessed with the technology he saw flourishing around him, and he took that precise spirit of innovation into his career as a filmmaker.
The last story is, of course, a Hollywood story. Since his start filming home movies with his siblings, begging his dad for a mixing board, Jon always had a dream of making big movies with broad appeal. But how do you make it in a place where none of your idols look like you, or come from where you came from? Through many failures and moments of nearly giving it all up to go help with the family restaurant, Jon’s story will inspire readers to believe in themselves and the thing they love no matter the cost.
The book is part the coming-of-age saga of Trevor Noah’s BORN A CRIME, part the creative application of Ed Catmull’s CREATIVITY, INC., and a dash of Shonda Rhimes’s YEAR OF YES inspiration – it has everything.
Jeremy McCarter is the collaborator working with Jon M. Chu. He is the co-author, with Lin-Manuel Miranda, of the #1 New York Times bestseller HAMILTON: The Revolution. He is the author of YOUNG RADICALS and the founder of the acclaimed audio storytelling company Make-Believe Association, and the literary executor of the novelist and playwright Thornton Wilder.
Jon M. Chu’s star is perpetually on the rise. He’s won countless awards for his films, and he’s currently finishing up the filming of movie adaptation of Wicked, starring Ariana Grande, which will be released in two parts at the end of November (Thanksgiving in the States) 2024 and 2025 and promises to be a gigantic release. Jon’s memoir is a testament to the grit, foresight, and magic that it took to make it happen.
“Just like in one of his movies, Jon M. Chu weaves a magical spell and takes us on a wondrous journey through his childhood, his family life, and his cinematic adventures as one of the most visionary talents working in Hollywood today. Viewfinder is a fascinating and heartfelt story that will inspire every reader." -Kevin Kwan, author of Crazy Rich Asians
